Letters in Wild Places began in 2024 as a way to connect strangers through the written word. The concept is simple: handwritten letters, poems, and art are left in unexpected corners of the world for people to discover when they need them most.
Each letter is written with intention - to offer comfort, encouragement, or simply a moment of human connection. Some are left in parks, tucked into library books, or hidden in cafes. Others travel further, finding their way to benches, train stations, and quiet streets.
The project has grown organically through the kindness of strangers who find these letters, read them, and sometimes choose to leave their own.
This project was born from a personal need to create something meaningful during a difficult time. Writing has always been a source of comfort and connection - a way to process feelings, reach out across distances, and build bridges between people who might never meet face to face.
Letter writing offers something unique in our digital age: slowness, thoughtfulness, and tangibility. There's something powerful about holding words someone took the time to write by hand, knowing they were meant for you - even if the writer never knew your name.
The founder maintains penfriend connections around the world and understands how transformative it can be to receive unexpected words of encouragement. Letters in Wild Places extends that same gift to strangers, creating moments of connection when they're needed most.
Every letter is written to be found
Connection doesn't require knowing someone's name
Small acts of creativity and kindness ripple outward
Writing heals both the writer and the reader
Everyone deserves to feel seen and valued
Since 2024, people from different countries have joined the project, writing and leaving their own letters. Some leave them locally, others send letters to be distributed in new places. The project continues to grow through these generous contributions.
If you've found a letter, thank you for giving those words a home. If you'd like to write your own, we'd love to have you join us.
